The Latin bridge in Sarajevo has become rather famous in history as this was where the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914. This event subsequently triggered World War I. Sarajevo also finds mention in history books as the place where the western and eastern Roman Empire split. The historical turbulence continued when the Orthodox of the east, the Ottomans of the south, and the Roman Catholics of the west converged, often resulting in clashes. Despite witnessing wars, Sarajevo is also a symbol of multi-cultural integration. Seventy years after the First World War, Sarajevo had the privilege of hosting the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. The Miljacka River is also popularly known as the Sarajevo River and is one of the most picturesque parts of Sarajevo. There are many Sarajevo Hotels located on the river as it flows through the centre of Sarajevo from the east to the west and finally meets up with the Bosna River. The source of the Miljacka River is in the town of Pale, a suburb of Sarajevo, while the Bosna River starts in Vrelo Bosne, near Ilidža in the west. This beautiful park is popular with the people of Sarajevo as well as tourists to the city. There are other smaller rivers and streams which further add to the beauty of the place. We offer a range of very interesting tours to help you discover these special hidden gems outside Sarajevo, take a look at our Sarajevo Tours & Activities page.
