We are assisting the community of Lukomir develop indigenous responsible tourism products, like setting up bed and breakfast facilities within private homes.
Highland villages have been largely ignored by the government and international donors in the past ten years. Very little has been done to mitigate the effects of years of conflict, resulting sadly in a steady departure of young people from the countryside down to the lower lying towns and suburbs. Green Visions, Cultural Heritage without Borders and the community of Lukomir have come together to try and halt the destruction of this unique highland village way of life.
We are currently implementing a project focused on the reconstruction of several traditional houses for use as bed and breakfast facilities.
Another important component will be the education and training of younger generations in traditional highland building techniques, as well as in the running of bed and breakfast facilities, and related activities.
We envision that by the end of this summer we will have repaired and equipped two houses, and that our first guests will stay in Lukomir sometime in August. The project aims to provide additional income to the villagers as well as give youth and other people from the community an opportunity to come back and reconnect, even if it is only during the summer period.
Coming on a trip to Lukomir will give you first hand knowledge on how the project is evolving. It will also give you an opportunity to see how you can get involved in the future of Lukomir.
