Itinerary

Day 1: After a two-hour drive through canyons and forests, the group will pass into Bosnia’s oldest national park, and drive up a mountain dirt road to the heart of the park – Zelengora. At Donje Bare the group will take a short walk and leave their packs at the newly rebuilt mountain hut. The lake of Donje Bare is lined with thick forests on one side and open mountain meadows on the other, and is on the route to the 1780 metre high Planinica Peak. From here the highest peak in Bosnia - Maglić - towers above at 2,386 metres above sea level. The group will pass Volujak’s rock face barrier and the 1200 metre deep canyon of the Sutjeska River, and return via Gornje Bare to the hut to complete this spectacular four-hour hike.

Day 2: There are two options for the second day - a strenuous hike up Maglić or a leisurely hike to Trnovačko Lake. The drive to the medieval forest Perućica will take a little more than 45 minutes. The park is a treasure trove of wildlife and a large number of endemic plants, and houses Maglić, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s highest and most impressive mountain, named after the thick fog that often surrounds its rocky summit. The group will briefly stop at Dragoš Sedlo to take in its view of the one of two remaining medieval forests in Europe - Perućica. Also on the trail is the lovely waterfall “Skakavac” plunging 75 metres down into the dark spruce and beech forest of Perućica. Here the group will split into those who are interested in the strenuous three hour hike up the 2,386 metre Maglić and those opting for an easy two hour hike to Trnovačko lake. At the end of the day the entire group will meet up again at the Trnovačko Glacier Lake, which is set in the middle of a huge amphitheatre of rocky peaks 1,500 metres tall. After a break the group will find its way back to Sarajevo.
